Good Morning Angels!

So you wish to join DayByDay’s film club, FilmByFilm. Congratulations! You’re in, and you have great taste! Whether you’re a film buff or a newcomer, all are welcome.

What qualifies me to host a film club? I don’t like your tone, but I’ll tell you. My name is Lucy Mills. I have an undergraduate degree in filmmaking, photography and new media and a master's in creative writing. I worked in the industry until I became too ill, as the industry isn’t accessible. My screenplays have won multiple awards at film festivals and are currently being read by producers. I also don’t go out and watch a ridiculous amount of films, as you can see from my Letterboxd, https://letterboxd.com/poocy/ (social network for logging films you’ve watched).  Now, if you’re finished questioning me, I’ll explain how FilmByFilm works.

Over 4 weeks, there will be an overall theme i.e. romance, or animation, or Pride, or Anya Taylor-Joy, etc., and each week will relate to the theme.

Week One: Silver Screen Time.

We will talk about a popular film that was in the cinema the previous month. If you’re a regular cinemagoer or want to start going, this is a great place for you.

Week Two: Getting Reel

This week will be about the film industry. We’ll discuss matters such as: the use of AI, should able-bodied actors play characters with disabilities, is the industry in decline, and why is Julia Roberts’ smile so magnetic. There will also be film quiz nights!. Maybe I’ll throw in some film theory if requested. There’s no homework, don’t worry. This week is for the film lovers and the curious who want to know more about the industry and want to chat with other film fans.

Week Three: Cine-ability

We’ll discuss a film about disability this week. The film may include themes about disability, or a character with disabilities, or an actor with a disability. If the film is linked to disability and chronic illness, we’ll talk about it. This week is for people who want to see more representation of disability on their screens.

Week Four: Timeless Takes

Week four will feature a film from the month’s theme. Bridget Jones for romance month, or Tangled for animation, or Portrait of a Lady on Fire for Pride, or The Menu for Anya Taylor-Joy. Come if you want to watch more films!

FilmByFilm isn’t about watching arthouse cinema or films you’re “supposed” to have seen. I’ve never seen Titanic. It’s about watching art in your home (or cinema) and seeing what you get from it. Does it speak to you? Did someone see it a different way? Why did they choose to do that? What does the colour purple mean? See where the film takes us.

You’ll have a month to watch the films, and I’ll be making sure you have access to the film, so you don’t have to spend any money renting or buying the film. Take notes if you want to, but don’t feel like you have to. I’ll post monthly on this group with dates, themes, topics, films and how to access the films, so you’ll have everything in writing.

Like all good cinema snacks, it’s pic n’ mix. Come every week, or once or twice a month or for a specific month’s theme. Curate your experience as you want.

So if you want to start a new hobby or meet other people with the same interest as you or want to escape for an hour to talk about anything other than your chronic illness or disability or want to talk about films but your friends won’t talk to you any more because you just talk about how much you love David Lynch and his works (not talking from experience) then join us!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts, feelings, and opinions on all things film!
